Guaranteed website traffic and SEO – Tread very carefully

You must have heard the horror stories of SEO firms that guarantee their clients first page ranking on Google and huge traffic in weeks. Well, the horror is in the fact that clients got more than they bargained for – and it was not in a positive sense. But then there are also phenomenal success stories of websites that moved to the top of search engines in weeks but purely on organic SEO techniques. So begs the question – is there some element of truth in what these ‘number 1 guaranteed’ SEO firms promise?

The role of an SEO firm is to increase your site’s search engine visibility and consequently the traffic to your website. This is done using a number of ways including keyword optimization, link building and article directory submissions. An SEO firm that has been in business for years should be able to find a working formula that would increase the chances of your site showing up on Google's top pages in less than twelve months.

This is more so if you are targeting a popular keyword. Statistics indicate that the most popular keywords take about six months of consistent effort to show up on Google's first page. So in a sense, SEO firms that have experience would have some level of credibility when they promise a first page ranking or your money back – as long as it is within a reasonable time frame.

So how do you identify the scam SEO artists who guarantee top page rankings? Well, there are a number of red flags that you should look out for when sifting through ‘guaranteed website traffic' SEO firms. Some of the most obvious indicators of potential scammers are those companies that claim to have a special relationship with Google, agencies that offer to work for far less than the work is normally worth and those that do not provide recourse if they do not meet their end of the bargain.

Let us look at these three. In the first case scenario are firms that claim to have the inside scoop on high page rankings when it comes to search engines such as Google. Anyone that tries to sell you this line is lying. Google uses a PageRank algorithm to rank the pages in its search engine index. The algorithm examines several factors around the quality, content and organic linking of the website. The details of the algorithm are not public and any firm claiming to have the inside scoop is stretching the truth to its uttermost limits.

The second red flag is cheap rates. SEO work is not only involving but also entails a wide variety of processes. Unless they intend to use black hat techniques which all search engines frown upon, there is no way $10 – $20 per month will cut it. After optimizing site content which is always the first step, back links have to be developed, articles published and press releases made all of which cost time, money and resources. If you want quality, above-board white hat SEO for you company then you need to be prepared to invest a reasonable amount of money.

The third red flag is the absence of recourse if you do not get a page one ranking. Before you hire a firm that guarantees you results within a certain period, make sure they offer you something in return in case their offer falls through. The weight of their guarantee should help you gauge their professionalism.
