Growing website traffic –what works and what does not

Research has shown that about 6000 new websites go live on a daily basis adding on to the over 130 million websites currently in existence. These huge numbers confirm the increasing popularity of the internet as a business tool. You can use the internet to launch your own business and propel it to the next level. In your quest to use the internet effectively, few things will be as important as increasing the amount of traffic to your website. But for you to see growing traffic, you must be well aware of what techniques work and actions that are an absolute no-no.

Avoid SEO (search engine optimization) if your website is not completely set up

Search engine results are ranked depending on (among other things) the relevance of the content in the search engine result pages. For this reason, a search engine will blacklist for a long time any website that is deemed under construction because of the number of blank or empty pages it contains. Consider it to be similar to getting slammed for delivering half baked work. So if you want to make use of SEO, ensure that your web site is complete before it goes live.

Off site blog

Consider making use of blogging platforms such as word press and type pad to post articles that are related to the type of products you will be featuring on your website. These articles should provide useful tips and thought provoking content for your readers that will draw their interest in your website and keep them coming back for more. Again, note that you should not link to your website unless it is complete.

Do not ignore the critical role of keywords in search engine ranking

Keywords are words that internet users are likely to key in when conducting an online search. They must thus form an integral part of your website traffic growth strategy. Look for at least 15 keywords closely related to the topic covered on your website and find out which ones are more likely to draw attention to your website and have less competition from other websites that could be selling the same thing or covering the same topic. Consider using Google’s webmaster tools to find the most popular keywords entered by end users but that attract low competition.

Headlines

Compelling, short and precise headlines work, while long and complicated are a turnoff. Experts on human psychology and memory retention have discovered that you only have about 10 seconds to capture your visitors’ attention. Therefore, create a headline that will compel them to stay on the website but that is not too wordy and hence confusing.

Simplify and refine your website text

Your text should be in line with the objectives of your visitors and not your own. When your visitors feel that their needs are addressed on your website they will visit it more often, refer it to others and even make purchases.  A pleasant end user’s experience on your website will draw in even more traffic.
